Liechtenstein at a glance
Liechtenstein brings a pedestrian capital, vineyards and Alpine landscapes into one small country between Switzerland and Austria. Start in Vaduz if museums and the castle view are your priorities; choose the mountains for a walking day, or stay overnight to give the valley and higher ground separate time. A short visit works more comfortably when it has a clear focus rather than an attempt to cover every landscape.
The country covers 160 square kilometres and has 11 municipalities. German is the official language and the Swiss franc is the currency. Vaduz is the capital, but it is only one part of a national visit. Balzers offers Gutenberg Castle, Triesenberg is a starting point for llama walks, and Malbun puts the mountains at the centre of the day.

Our picks: Liechtenstein experiences
Choose the local llama walk for time outdoors or the Vaduz walk for a small-group introduction. For a longer day, compare the Zurich bus trip with the private wine and chocolate outings.

When to visit
Use museum days, castle seasons and mountain conditions to choose your date.
Start with the Städtle and the castle view
The Städtle is a pedestrian zone, so it makes a useful place to begin on foot. Decide whether to spend your main indoor visit at the Kunstmuseum, with modern and contemporary art and the Hilti Art Foundation, or at the National Museum for the country’s history and culture. The Postal Museum adds stamps and postal history without an admission charge. These are separate choices, rather than attractions that every guided walk includes.
Vaduz Castle stands about 120 metres above town. The uphill walk from the Städtle takes roughly 20 minutes as an orientation, with extra time needed for looking around and returning. The residence is seen from outside; its interior is not open to the public. There is no parking or bus stop directly at the castle. Give this walk its own place in your day rather than treating the view as an indoor castle visit.
Mountains, vineyards and a longer stay
Malbun offers a different setting from the capital, with summer walking and a planned winter sports season. At the 2 November 2026 planning date, summer lift operation had ended; the coming winter season is planned for 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to weather. The summer photograph shows the landscape, rather than conditions to expect on any particular date.
For a gentle guided outing, the Triesenberg llama walk includes an animal for the walk and information about the animals and Liechtenstein. Its mountain and Rhine Valley views belong to a very different day from the demanding Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern route. Choose the latter only with suitable mountain experience and a fresh assessment of trail conditions. Wine offers another focus: the Hofkellerei lies in the Herawingert vineyard in Vaduz, while private wine excursions can combine tasting with transport from Zurich.

Good to know before choosing your day
A bus day trip to Heidiland and Liechtenstein starts at Zurich Bus Station and includes air-conditioned transport and Wi-Fi. Hotel transfers and the optional Heidi House admission are extra. The private three-country chocolate excursion instead includes Zurich hotel pickup and return, a chauffeur-driven vehicle, Feldkirch, Vaduz, a castle viewpoint and a Lake Walensee stop. These are different travel formats, not interchangeable tickets for the same amount of time in Vaduz.
The small-group four-country excursion includes hotel transfers and a local driver-guide, with a Rhine Falls boat ride from March to October or a panoramic platform ticket from November to February. The private wine excursion includes a Vaduz tasting and Zurich hotel transfers. For a shorter local introduction, the express walk starts at St. Florin Cathedral and includes a knowledgeable local and personalised recommendations.
For independent arrival, take the train to Sargans, Buchs SG or Feldkirch and continue by bus. Read the arrival guide before fixing your day around connections. Overnight guests at participating accommodation can receive WELCOME, with local bus travel and selected discounts; activate it before travelling. The separately purchased ALL INCLUSIVE pass is a different product. Neither should be treated as a universal ticket for every museum, train and mountain lift.
Questions about visiting Liechtenstein
Is this an independent guide?
Yes. This website is an independent travel guide and is separate from the principality, its municipalities, the tourism organisation and transport or tour businesses.
Can I enter Vaduz Castle?
The residence is not open for public interior visits. Plan the exterior view and the uphill walk described in the castle guide.
Should I book a day trip or stay overnight?
A day trip suits a focused introduction. Staying gives you room to separate museums, vineyards and mountains; use the accommodation areas guide to choose a base.
Does Liechtenstein have an airport?
The country has no airport. Zurich Airport is a gateway, followed by onward travel by road or rail and bus; total journey time depends on the connection.
