How to get to Liechtenstein without a car

Working out how to get to Liechtenstein starts with the last connection into the country. Liechtenstein has no airport of its own. For Vaduz, a practical public transport route combines a train to Sargans, Buchs SG or Feldkirch with a LIEmobil bus. Choose the gateway that fits your incoming journey, then look up the connection through to Vaduz Post rather than stopping your search at the railway station.

From Sargans, lines 11 and 12E provide the onward route towards Vaduz. From Buchs SG, line 12 reaches Schaan Bahnhof, where line 11 continues towards Vaduz Post; some line 12 services also run towards Vaduz. From Feldkirch, use line 11 towards Vaduz Post. Match the actual service to your date and destination, especially when continuing beyond the capital.

Liechtenstein train connections and local fares

The useful distinction is between the mainline railway journey and the local bus leg. Search for the complete itinerary and allow room for the interchange. A railway network map describes routes, while the timetable for your travel day supplies the actual connections. This page explains independent arrival by rail and bus rather than a sightseeing train excursion.

LIEmobil fares depend on zones. Published standard single fares are CHF 3 for one zone, CHF 4 for two zones and CHF 5 for three or more zones; corresponding day tickets are CHF 5, CHF 7 and CHF 9. These are local fares, separate from the train journey from Zurich. Select the zones for your particular route instead of treating the smallest fare as a countrywide ticket. For a longer visit, compare travel needs with the guest card described in where to stay.

Taxi and transfer from Zurich Airport (ZRH)

A prearranged road transfer can suit travellers who want to continue from the airport to their accommodation without a railway and bus interchange. Set the collection point, destination, luggage needs and fare with the service you choose. Keep an airport arrival separate from a journey into Zurich city: the private transfer presented here travels from Vaduz to Zurich city and is intended for departure.

Rail plus bus remains an alternative for the arrival journey. Compare it using your flight arrival, onward connection and final accommodation address. Avoid planning a tightly timed activity immediately after landing; leave space in your schedule to reach Vaduz and settle in before starting your sightseeing.

Car rental and parking

Collecting a rental car at Zurich Airport is an option when your route links Vaduz, Balzers and Malbun. Before choosing a car, establish permission for the border crossings on your itinerary, insurance conditions, any one-way arrangement and motorway vignette coverage. Include those terms in the comparison rather than judging solely by the headline rental price.

From Zurich, the road approach uses the A3 towards Sargans and then the A13, with the Sevelen/Vaduz exit serving the centre. The Swiss motorway vignette costs CHF 40. In Vaduz, the Städtle is a pedestrian zone. Central short-stay parking has a maximum stay of three hours, with the first hour free and a CHF 1.50 hourly charge. For longer stays, the municipality points visitors towards Parkhaus Marktplatz. There is no parking or bus stop directly at Vaduz Castle; use the uphill walk described in the castle guide.

Zurich before the onward journey

If you stay in Zurich first, decide whether you want an independent visit with time in Vaduz or a multi-stop excursion. The day trip comparison explains that choice. Keep the overnight stay, airport journey and excursion meeting point distinct when arranging your travel.

Travel dates and border formalities

For autumn 2026 travel, check the connection for your exact date. Changes on the Zurich to Salzburg corridor run from 15 October to 12 December 2026, while works between Buchs SG and Ötztal are announced for 18 to 23 November 2026. These notices do not mean that every Zurich to Sargans train has the same delay.

Liechtenstein belongs to Schengen and forms part of the Swiss customs territory. Immigration requirements and customs rules are separate matters. Check the documents required for your nationality and the rules for goods you carry, particularly on a route through Austria.
