Things to Do in Liechtenstein: Vaduz, Museums and Mountains

The things to do in Liechtenstein span the Rhine Valley, Balzers, Vaduz and the mountains. Choose a landscape first, then build a day around its access and season.

Things to do in Liechtenstein beyond the capital

Choosing things to do in Liechtenstein starts with the contrast between the Rhine Valley and the mountains. Vaduz brings together museums, the pedestrian Städtle and views of the castle. Balzers adds Gutenberg Castle, while Malbun shifts the focus towards walking and winter sport. The country covers 160 km², but that compact area is a reason to choose carefully rather than put every landscape into one hurried circuit.

Make your main activity the anchor: an exhibition, a valley cycle ride or time in the mountains. Add a second place only after allowing for the journey and its opening arrangements. A museum afternoon and an independent mountain route require very different preparation. Our Vaduz guide covers the capital in detail; this page looks across the country.

Gutenberg Castle in Balzers

Gutenberg gives the southern part of a visit a clear focus. Reach it on foot by the Egon-Rheinberger-Weg from the community centre or by the Burgweg. The outer bailey is freely accessible throughout the year. Access to the castle complex follows a different calendar: it is closed from 1 November to 30 April and available for registered events from 1 May to 31 October.

During the season, the chapel and rose garden open on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. That is a specific Sunday arrangement, so keep the outer bailey and the seasonal spaces separate when planning. Castle tours and events require registration at least 14 days ahead. General vehicle access on the Burgweg is prohibited; a walk to the castle should be part of the plan rather than an assumed drive to its door.

The Rhine Valley and cycle routes

The Rhine Valley offers a different way to experience the country from the streets of Vaduz. Choose a valley cycling route if the ride itself is your priority, and distinguish it from mountain biking. The tourism portal lists more than 220 km of cycle routes; the cycling version of the Liechtenstein Trail runs for 85 km through all the municipalities. Those figures describe a network and a complete route, not a suggested distance for every visitor.

EuroVelo 15 is the cross-border Rhine route. Decide on your intended section and return journey before starting, with route conditions and protected areas in mind. A short valley outing can be a separate experience rather than a transfer between attractions. For public transport connections and the practical arrival choices, use the getting there guide.

Malbun and the mountain landscape

Malbun belongs in a mountain-focused plan. Summer walking and winter sport have different operating calendars. As of 2 November 2026, the summer lift season has ended; the next winter season is planned for 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to weather. An image of green slopes should not be read as a promise that lifts are running on your travel date.

For walking, separate a gentle outing from the demanding Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern route. Mountain conditions need checking before setting out, especially where snow can remain into late spring. The walking and hiking guide explains that distinction, while seasonal planning helps align the visit with operating dates.

A photo and selfie walk in Vaduz

The guided photo walk lasts 90 minutes and meets by the statues in front of the cathedral. Its included elements are a small-group experience, a knowledgeable local and personalised recommendations. It suits visitors who want local company while exploring photographic subjects in Vaduz. Bring your own interest in taking pictures: the experience is a walk, with no professional photo shoot or delivered image files included.

For indoor time, choose among the art, national and postal museums. For the castle, plan an exterior view and the uphill walk described on the Vaduz Castle page. Wine is another separate theme, covered in the wine tasting guide, rather than an extra promised element of the photo walk.

Planning questions

Can I enter Gutenberg Castle whenever I visit?

The outer bailey is accessible year-round. The castle complex is closed from November to April; chapel and rose garden access is seasonal on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00.

Does the photo walk include a photographer?

It includes a knowledgeable local, a small-group walk and personalised recommendations. Professional photography and image delivery are not included services.

Should I combine museums with an alpine route?

Give a demanding mountain route its own preparation and time. Museums fit a Vaduz-focused day; mountain plans depend on the route, weather and current conditions.
